Overview

The Research Scientist works with the Steve and Cindy Rasmussen Institute for Genomic Medicine Clinical Laboratory Directors to design experiments related to the analysis of laboratory developed and translational assay data, including computational and statistical analysis and scientific writing of results. In a collaborative team science setting, this individual prepares technical materials such as abstracts, summary reports, scientific papers and presentations, and has demonstrated experience in peer-reviewed publication.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Understands and demonstrates Nationwide Children's Hospital Staff Core Competencies.
  • Demonstrates self-management skills. Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently and independently, promoting a team environment and maintaining a cooperative and supportive atmosphere.
  • Maintains knowledge of techniques, procedures, and protocols, lab-wide and within lab section. Reviews and acknowledges procedures as required.
  • Collects, manages, and analyzes data for clinical and translational projects in both the germline and somatic setting within IGM
  • Analyzes data in accordance with appropriate statistical procedures, and prepares reports, related graphs, images and tables of study results
  • Demonstrates competency in computational skills including excel, word, powerpoint, reference managers, statistical programs, and scripting
  • Prepares technical materials such as summary reports, scientific manuscripts, and standard operating procedures
  • Prepares protocols for research regulated by an institutional review board
  • Prepares scientific abstracts and presentations
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • PhD in genetics, molecular biology or a related discipline OR Master of Science in genetics, molecular biology or a related discipline with one to two years of experience in genomic analysis
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to critically read and interpret data from scientific publications
  • Strong scientific writing skills and demonstrated experience in peer-reviewed publication
  • Must be able to use research methods in generating and collecting data and analyzing the data for report preparation
  • Knowledge of guidelines and regulations surrounding human subjects research
  • Experience in working with clinical genomic data, including next-generation sequencing data
  • Experience with genomic databases, genomic browsers, and professional guidelines within the field of genetics
  • Understanding of the operation of a clinical laboratory is preferred
  • Skill at collaboration in the setting of team science
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to initiate and work on several projects at a time with minimal supervision; motivation to follow through to completion while adhering to deadlines and maintaining accurate records.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires excellent manual dexterity, good visual acuity and hearing, and excellent communication skills as well as a better-than-average ability to write. Physical activities frequently include sitting, talking on the phone or in person, utilizing fine motor skills, standing, walking, and occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds independently.
