I see job seekers overwhelm the interviewers all the time.
What do I mean?
What I mean is when you are interviewing, and you feel like you are not convincing the interviewer that you are qualified for the job – so you start telling the interviewer, in an unsolicited manner, even more details about how awesome and qualified you are, in hopes that you will trigger something in them so they think, “Eureka! Th...
I had an HR consultant reach out to me and ask how we prepare candidates for culture fit interview questions.
Essentially, she wanted to know about the list of questions we use to prepare our clients for when companies want to determine if someone is a good culture fit for their organization.
This is the part of the interview process when the company has already determined that your qualifications are suitable. Now th...
Just when you think the resume is outdated or no longer serves a purpose, it is resurrected with new life and new purpose – assuming it ever really died in the first place.
What is the new-to-you-because-it-really-isn’t-new resume purpose?
Ensuring your resume can be read on mobile devices.
When I was a recruiter, I used to look at resumes in 2008 via email on my chunky Samsung phone (Man, I loved that...
Carl (**name changed to protect the identity of our successful client) met all of his job objectives, and then found himself having worked himself out of a job.
His company was very grateful he set them up to succeed and gave him 6 months severance to find his new job.
He searched on his own for 4 months. After all, Carl thought, “I’m a successful sales person… I can sell myself. No one knows me bet...
On January 4th, 2017, CNN Money published “Macy’s is closing 68 stores, cutting 10,000 jobs.” Although I am very positive about the opportunity that avails us all in 2017, this is not a great headline to see four days in to the new year.
However, small or large, no company is immune to the layoff phenomenon.
And no job is immune from the downsizing phenomenon.
Your career is in play. Always....
My buddy Chris Russell of Career Cloud wrote an article for Recruiting Headlines titled, “20 Recruiting Pros Share Their Plans for 2017” where he polls 20 recruiters from various fields and asks them:
“What will you be doing more of/less of to attract talent next year?”
I tallied the answers and here are the results:

Social Media – 4 mentions

I was asked the same interview prep question three times last week. They all more or less went like this:
“I have a simple question. I was let go from my job this week. The reason was because:
A) I had a conflict with my boss that came to a head.
Or
B) I was a whistleblower on a wrong practice my department was doing and instead of fixing it they let me go.
Or
C) My department was moved to Cincinnati...
I have talked to about a dozen job seekers over the last two weeks that are stuck.
They are waiting until they perfect the language on their resume before they send it out, and they keep asking for feedback.
And they get different feedback every time, so they are in constant resume editing mode, but not contacting anyone for interviews.
They want precisely the right list of contacts to reach out to before they star...
Embracing uncomfortability is another way to avoid being complacent.
We are living in uncomfortable times.
Those solely seeking comfort and maintaining the status quo in their careers may find themselves blindsided when their company decides to insource, outsource, expand or contract – if they are on the wrong side of that corporate action.
Proactively keep your network engaged.
Help others reach their go...
Just like 2016, 2017 brings new and innovative ways to present your resume, as well as tactics to utilize the information captured during the resume building process. In some cases the 2016 Trends are still very prevalent and still need to be incorporated into designing and writing a new executive resume document.
In addition to an eye-catching design layout, achievement-driven bullets and strong word choice to define yo...
