The Electron Microscopy (EM) Laboratory is the branch of biology which studies the ultrastructure of cells. It is a laboratory within the Division of Renal Pathology (though they do work with other tissues), within the Department of Pathology. EM staff prepare, view, and photograph various portions of electron microscopy specimens from kidney biopsies, as well as other human tissue and cells, for diagnostic purposes, supporting the Department of Pathology in diagnostic functions pertaining to patient care.
The Electron Microscopy Specialists process minute tissue specimens, embed them in epoxy resin embedding media, polymerize the embedded tissue, use the ultramicrotome to cut both thick (1 um) and thin (80 nm) sections, stain sections, review, and photograph specimens.
The Electron Microscopy Specialist 4 is responsible for assisting in ensuring adherence to all policies pertaining to Electron Microscopy; assists the Electron Microscopy Specialist 5 to ensure staff are properly trained with training properly documented; assists in ensuring that the work environment, and equipment, are maintained in a manner to provide safety for all staff and visitors to the laboratory; helps to ensure that the lab is maintained in a constant state of survey readiness; works independently on both clinical and research specimens
