Overview

Poison Information Provider (Contingent)

The Poison Information Provider (PIP) aids in the assessment and management of poisonings and toxicology under the continuous supervision of a Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI). The provider acts as an "extender" of the CSPI by assisting with telephone prioritization of possible poison exposures, documenting histories, calculating dosages of potentially toxic drugs, and assisting with other documentation and routine follow-up calls.

Schedule: (Contingent, Non-Benefits Eligible)

2nd Shift Weekends (Preferred) & Weekdays

Required to work 2 weekends a month

Responsibilities
    Receives and prioritizes telephone inquiries regarding poison or chemical emergencies, obtains thorough history to determine nature of exposure, routes call as appropriate to a CSPI or SPI, and calculates dosages of potentially toxic substances to facilitate development of treatment recommendations.
  • Consults toxicology reference sources, medical or managing supervisors, or other diverse resources to develop recommendations for treatment sites and therapy in accordance with medically approved guidelines.
  • Conducts follow-up calls on all symptomatic, potentially symptomatic, or patients requiring treatments as dictated by poison center policy, procedures, and guidelines. Makes recommendation for referrals or continued observation.
  • Collects data and accurately documents collected information in the poison center electronic medical record.
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Education:

  • Associate's degree (or equivalent) in a health-related field (pharmacy, nursing, pre-medicine, veterinary, or dentistry), required.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology, required.
  • Knowledge of emergency medicine terminology, preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, required.

Abilities:

  • Ability to recognize limits of personal knowledge and when to seek assistance from others, required.
  • Excellent proficiency navigating multiple technological platforms (Microsoft Office, Epic), required.

Experience:

  • Completion of Poison Center Experiential Rotation, preferred.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bending/twisting, squatting/kneeling, climbing stairs/ladders, walking, reaching above shoulders, lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling - Occassionally
  • Standing - Frequently
  • Sitting, flexing/extending of neck, hand use (grasping, gripping, turning), repetitive hard/arm use, computer skills - Continuously
