Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Coordinator

Overview

Full-time, 40 hours per week

Monday-Friday with flexibility

Will rotate on-call with up to three physicians; One week on-call requirement per month.

This position is responsible for the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care for patients with a ventricular assist device (VAD). This position also includes a significant research and education component involving the development of educational materials, patient recruitment for clinical trials, and data collection for regulatory and mandated registry needs.

Responsibilities

This position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Patient education, staff education, community education, surgical coordination, inpatient consultation, outpatient clinic visits, data collection and record keeping.
  • Coordinates the care of patients with a ventricular assist device from pre-VAD evaluation through post-VAD follow-up.
  • Serves as liaison for the transplant team, cardiologists, perfusion technology, consulting services, dietetics, social services, outlying physician offices/clinics, insurance company representatives/case mangers, and research coordinators.
  • Develops and presents educational programs for patients and community facilities in Central Ohio and surrounding areas.
  • Assists with coordination and submission of annual statistics to national organizations and governmental agencies.
  • Assists with support and services for the Pediatric and Adult Advanced Cardiac Therapies (PAACT) team attending and attends regular team meetings with the PAACT team.
  • Will also serve as an adjunct to the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) team with VAD-specific care.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an ACEN or CCNE accredited college of nursing.
  • Current Ohio RN licensure
  • BSN required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Prior cardio-thoracic and/or transplant experience required, care of patients with ventricular assist devices and research experience preferred.
  • Flexible, sensitive, and adaptable to patient care, research, and transplant activities.
  • Must be dependable, self-directed, independent, organized, and detail oriented.
  • Basic Life Support certification required upon hire.

Physical/Visual/Mental Requirements

  • Frequently removes charts from low file drawers.
  • Transports charts and other items to and from clinic in a cart (50 lbs or less).
  • Assists patients in wheelchairs or on stretchers.
  • Assist with patient transfers, work with PT/OT, while on VAD
  • Draws blood from patients.
  • Frequent handling of medical records, files, charts.
  • Communicates multiple times during day by telephone, inputs data/information into computer, writes in charts and dictates notes and letters.
  • Occasionally travels off-site to provide in-services and presentations.

Work Environment

The work involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions, use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire and other safety regulations.
